Honoring Iconic Sacramento
Businesses

Each year, the Sacramento History Alliance honors Sacramento businesses that have met the test of time and become iconic treasures in our community.  They may not be the oldest, or the biggest, but they are revered and beloved by Sacramentans from all walks of life — we call these businesses “Venerable”.

The Burnett Awards are named for Burnett Miller, a native Sacramentan, past Mayor, philanthropist, business leader, art collector, tennis player, and history buff, his love of Sacramento knew no bounds.  The family business – Burnett & Sons Planing Mill and Lumber Company founded in 1869 – is still a thriving part of Sacramento’s culture.  It is in his name that we recognize local businesses, like Burnett & Sons, that have become a part of the fabric that makes Sacramento distinct.

Sitting on the traditional territory and ancestral homelands of the Nisenan Tribal people, the Sacramento History Museum building is a replica of Sacramento’s 1854 City Hall and Waterworks building.  The Museum welcomes nearly 60,000 visitors each year, including 12,000 school children to learn of Sacramento’s diverse cultural history.
